1.Academics: The academics are very rigorous and the teachers are almost always very supportive and open to giving one-on-one attention and help. Many of them act like your friends and you can tell they really do care about your success and work and that is uplifting.
2.Academics: There's great variety and the professors actually care about teaching you the material, even if they can't do that that well. There's a lot of work involved as with every class but if you can balance out your time and not procrastinate you'll be okay. The registration process is a bit frustrating, especially for freshmen but that's because there is a lottery and juniors go first, sophomores next and so on.
3.Academics: Everyone here deserves to be here. With that said, almost everyone here was a straight A student in AP classes, or an amazing service project leader, or the star of every play. You have to be ready to fail here. It's college, you're adjusting and with everyone being so smart your professors are going to push you way beyond your limits. You will be stressed out at points and try to pull all nighters (DON'T DO IT) but all the hard work is worth it. Your GPA may not be as beautiful as it was in high school, but you're getting an education from one of the best universities in the nation. You're constantly presented with amazing job opportunities from amazing companies, but you have these opportunities because you're a CMU student and that's enough for them to show interest in you.
4.Majors: The majors are hard but definitely worth it. It's a lot of work but it pays off. You are surrounded by people who all love to learn and are willing to do work, which is a great atmosphere. Many people participate in research and internships. Even as a freshman, it is very easy to find research by contacting professors and working in their labs. Many people get great internships with great pay, and the career center hosts many events to help people figure out what they want to do with their life and how they should get there.
5.Majors: Every major requires a lot of time commitment. Most technical majors have a lot of work to do but it really pays off because they end up getting the best jobs. CMU is #1 for CS and as such, everyone involves themselves in a little bit of CS because having it as a minor certainly doesn't hurt your chances out in the job world.
6.Majors: I think my major has too many course requirements. However, CMU does try to make sure you graduate on time. I plan on going to medical school to become a doctor and I'm just concerned about timing and how I will fit all the medical school requirements into my schedule along with all my major requirements. There are many courses for a "double" major like mine, since Psychology and Biological Sciences are sort of two majors meshed into one.
7.Diversity: There is so much diversity on campus that everyone is accepted. There are many clubs for ethnic/racial minorities. There are people of various economic backgrounds, but people of all economic backgrounds are accepted. CMU is very liberal and political beliefs are all accepted. All religions are accepted and all sexual orientations are accepted.
8.Diversity: Diversity was one of my main draws to Carnegie Mellon. There are people of every race, religion, nationality, orientation, and political standing. Being one of the most expensive schools in the country, economic background may be relatively homogeneous with most students upper middle class and above. However, everyone comes to work hard and pursue promising work, so no one is looked down upon for their economic status. With such a diverse campus (17% international and less than 50% white) it is impossible not to respect every kind of person you come across. My fraternity pledge class of 13 alone represents the US, Canada, Venezuela, Ukraine, India and Kenya as countries of origin. You will have the incredible experience of meeting people from everywhere in the world at this school. I have learned more from interacting with people at Carnegie than I have from classes.
9.Guys & Girls: The dating scene at CMU has been trashed on for ages. It is getting significantly better. The ratio has been steadily improving (the most recent incoming class had a 55/45 male/female ratio) and students are not ugly by any means. Those that are a bit reclusive aren't very visible as they don't go outside to socialize much. What makes CMU students great for dating, is that everyone is very motivated and interested in what they want to do in college which shows through in their confidence and makes everyone more attractive. Yea they may not look the best, but you'll never really have a dull conversation with a student at Carnegie Mellon
10.Guys & Girls: There's enough guys, definitely. But a lot of them aren't very interested in dating or seeking relationships. Sometimes you'll meet a guy and think he's the one but it's probably safe to say he's thinking about when they're going to play video games with their friends or eat food. Like they say, the odds are good, but the goods are odd.
11.Administration: There's amnesty for alcohol use and things like that. Sexual assaults and really serious crimes like that are more recently being taken more seriously, but things like attendance is on a per-teacher basis and not always taken seriously at all
12.Administration: Campus rules are generally pretty reasonable. They don't condone underage drinking and drug-use. The policies are there to better students' academic and social lives, so it is easy to comply by these rules.
13.Athletics: Although Varsity sports are not big by any means, most people end up playing some sort of intramural sport at some point in their time at CMU. There are also many club teams you can join by just walking on, leading to many options for those who want to play sports, but not at a varsity level. Varsity Training facilities are also open to the campus most of the time when the Varsity teams do not need them
14.Athletics: The sports teams here are pretty good. The tennis and track teams are great, football is ok. Students always get in for free and so does everyone for most games. Intramurals can get pretty competitive and fun.
15.Campus Food:Despite there being many options, none of them ever change what they have, so even if you try to change it up, it's pretty easy to get tired of the food. The hardest thing to find is a variety of healthy options. If you don't care about eating healthy, the options are actually pretty good.
16.Campus Food: People who complain about campus dining tend to be ungrounded. The food on campus is very good for a college. Meal plans operate on blocks, which get you an entree, drink and side or two depending on time of day. There are no dining halls; instead there are a wide range of restaurant type eateries at which you can use your meal plan. From Indian to Mexican, Italian, and Chinese, almost any type of food is available and the quality is more than satisfying.
17.Campus Food: The food itself isn't that bad but there are limited options and it gets really old. Good places are the Exchange, City Grill and Take Comfort. "Gallo de Oro" sucks.
18.Campus Housing:Most dorms are extremely conveniently located just a few minutes away from classes, on campus dining, and the library, and and I enjoyed living in Donner my freshman year. However, living off campus on Forbes my last three years was much, much better.
19.Campus Housing: Cost is ridiculously high and you often have to call maintenance, but most of the dorms are close to classes which is nice when the weather gets bad. Most have good sized rooms, but the apartment kitchens tend to me kind of bad
20.Transportation: Campus-provided transportation is very convenient and on-time. However, buses in Pittsburgh under Port Authority are rather unreliable sometimes. Transportation is covered under tuition with your ID. There are buses to the airport, which is nice, but the ride takes longer than my actual plane ride. For long distance transportation, there are Megabuses and Greyhound buses downtown.
21.Local Area: Pittsburgh is a great college town if you know where to look. There's shopping, dining, recreation, parks, etc... but the weather usually shuts down most people's travel plans due to the sheer miserable-ness of getting anywhere. Anything you need to buy is easily within range, and there's pretty much something for everyone if you take time off studying and go explore!
22.Local Area: Pittsburgh is a wonderful city that has a lot of nooks and cool places to explore. It does take a little effort to get around, but it's certainly worth exploring (especially the food in Pittsburgh!)
23.Health & Safety: Safety and security is great. Whenever crime happens in the neighborhoods around campus, the police send out emails and mostly everyone checks those right away as they have them on their phones. I feel super safe walking back to campus even in the middle of the night.
